MUSCLE TRAINING: KEFIR OR STEROIDS?
When I was a student in the former Soviet Union, I came to know through my professor in physiology that Soviet sportsmen drank keffir, an especially prepared bacterial yoghurt drink which provided amino acid chains to build up protein in muscles. They also took ginseng (Siberian) to improve muscle power and endurance. That is why the Soviet weightlifters and other sportsmen were unbeatable at the Olympics.
Some sportsmen used steroids or testosterone to build up muscles. These drugs increase muscle bulk only when the muscles are exercised and so there is no easy way of building up muscle bulk. There is no proven benefit of this artificial use of muscle bulk enhancers but their harmful effects are well recorded.
Muscles can atrophy too when not used so frequently. They lose their bulk. This is clearly noted when a leg or foot is put in a cast after a fracture. Some conditions like polio affect the nerves and therefore cause paralysis and atrophy of muscles in the legs and other affected limbs.
